Arthur J. Tipton, Ph.D., Senior Vice President and General Manager, Pharmaceuticals, joined SurModics as Vice President, SurModics and President, SurModics Pharmaceuticals, following SurModics' acquisition of Brookwood Pharmaceuticals in August 2007. In February 2010, he was named Senior Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer of SurModics, and in October 2010, he was named Senior Vice President and General Manager of the pharmaceutical business unit. Dr. Tipton joined Southern Research Institute in 2004 and then in January 2005 became President and CEO of Brookwood Pharmaceuticals when it was launched as a new company based on Southern Research Institute's pharmaceutical formulations business. Dr. Tipton held various positions at Durect Corporation, Southern BioSystems (now part of Durect), and Atrix Laboratories (now part of QLT Inc.). Dr. Tipton earned a Ph.D. in Polymer Science and Engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and a B.S. in Chemistry from Spring Hill College. Back to Top
Paul Spencer, Vice President Biomaterials, Manufacturing and Facilities, brings more than 26 years of leadership and management experience including over 19 years in the biomaterial, drug delivery and medical device industries. Mr. Spencer has been a vice president at SurModics Pharmaceuticals (formerly Brookwood Pharmaceuticals) and the General Manager of the Lakeshore Biomaterials unit since its inception in January 2005. Previously, he worked in the Business Development Group at Alkermes, with his primary responsibility being the Medisorb® bioabsorbable polymer business unit. He also has broad based experience in licensing as well as the manufacture and development of biomaterials and medical devices. Mr. Spencer's experience includes being a top sales consultant and distributor at Biomet's subsidiary, Lorenz Surgical, where he was involved in the launch and commercialization of the world's first Craniomaxillofacial absorbable plating system. He also served over six years as a U.S. Army Aviation Officer in the U.S. and abroad. Mr. Spencer holds a B.S. in Quantitative Business Analysis from Indiana University and is a graduate of numerous U.S. Army advanced leadership Schools. Back to Top
Tom Tice, Ph.D., Vice President, Research, Pharmaceuticals, specializes in microencapsulation, implants, controlled release, and medical applications of bioabsorbable polymers. Prior to joining SurModics Pharmaceuticals, he held a variety of positions at Southern Research Institute and Brookwood Pharmaceuticals. In particular he is known for his accomplishments involving injectable, extended-release microparticles made with bioabsorbable lactide/glycolide polymers designed to release pharmaceuticals and vaccines at precise rates for days, weeks or months. He led the team that developed the first commercial, injectable microparticle product. He holds 31 US patents with numerous foreign equivalents, 11 pending US patents and has more than 180 publications, presentations and invited lectures to his credit. Dr. Tice earned his Ph.D. in Biophysics from Syracuse University and held a postdoctoral position at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (Microbiology). Back to Top
Deborah A. Fox, Ph.D., Vice President, Business Development, Pharmaceuticals, brings 25 years of pharmaceutical industry experience in research and development, project management, strategic planning and business development. Prior to joining SurModics Pharmaceuticals, she served as Vice President, Business Development at Corium International, Inc. where she negotiated and closed several license, development and supply agreements with pharmaceutical, biotechnology and generic companies and participated in the company's first equity financing. Dr. Fox also served as Vice President, Business Development at Penwest Pharmaceuticals (now Endo Pharmaceuticals) and held management positions in R&D and business development at Fuisz Technologies (now Biovail) and led a research group at Alza Corporation (now J&J) focused on mucosal transport, oral protein delivery and colon-targeted drug delivery. Dr. Fox holds one patent and has contributed to over 25 publications and presentations. She earned her B.S. degree in Pharmacy from the University of Connecticut, M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Pharmacology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Pharmacology at the University of Arizona.
