Controller
The Controller is the chief accounting and financial executive for SurModics Pharmaceuticals reporting to the Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of SurModics. This position is responsible for organizing, directing and controlling the work of accounting personnel in collecting, summarizing and interpreting financial data. The Controller also develops forecasts, measures actual performance against operating plans, and interprets the results of operations to management.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate budgeting variance analysis
  • Provide analytical support to internal customers
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports for business unit/legal entity
  • Prepare financial forecasts and presentations for business unit
  • Provide general support with corporate tax issues, as well as property taxes and sales/use taxes
  • Maintain the general ledger in the financial reporting system
  • Manage cost accounting process and analysis
  • Assist with customer manufacturing/development proposals and other pricing/financial analysis exercises
  • Perform treasury role for legal entity

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and CPA required. MBA a plus.
  • Minimum of 10 years of general accounting experience, including experience in maintaining general ledger.
  • Experience with cost accounting activities including product cost rollups and standard costing.
  • Experience with treasury activities.
  • Experience with integrated accounting packages or ERP (e.g. JD Edwards, Lawson, etc.).
  • Strong accounting, analytical, quantitative and organizational skills.
  • Independent and results oriented with a hands on attitude.  Strong PC and spreadsheet skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills. Collaborative style. Able to effectively interface with numerous business customers and financial management.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities at the same time and proactively identify and resolve accounting and financial issues.
  • Sound judgment; high ethical standards.
High level of confidentiality and sensitivity.


Director and Senior Counsel This position will work closely with business unit senior management and will be responsible for developing and supporting strategies that enhance the value of the company's growing patent portfolio and that support sales-related activities. Duties will include patent portfolio management, supervision of outside counsel in the drafting and prosecution of patent applications, management and consultation on all intellectual property issues (including, patentability, patent landscape analysis, due diligence investigations, etc.), and development and implementation of patent strategies. Responsibilities will also include transactional support, including negotiating, drafting and reviewing an extensive range of business and technology transactions, such as, research and development, licensing, clinical and commercial supply and manufacturing agreements. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, be a strategic thinker, decision maker and problem solver. Must be a team player, with ability to work cooperatively with colleagues and manage outside counsel effectively. Qualified candidates will have a J.D. and 5 + years of experience with a demonstrated track record of professional success as an attorney in a major firm or corporate law department. Candidates should also have a degree (advanced degree preferred) in chemistry, biology or related technical discipline. Strong drafting, negotiation and communication skills required. Extensive experience in the pharmaceutical or medical technology industries is strongly preferred.

Business Development Manager, Pharmaceutical Manufacturing This position will focus on identifying new customers and strengthening relationships with existing customers in the manufacture of clinical trial materials and final drug product. This individual will participate in a team selling environment that includes manufacturing experts, licensing counsel and senior executives. Responsibilities include identifying and qualifying new customers, securing and coordinating appointments with prospective customers, and maintaining strong relationships with new and current customers. Candidates must have a strong ability to communicate technically, be able to represent advanced parenteral manufacturing and to understand and react to potential client’s needs. BS degree in science, engineering or business with a minimum of five years in pharmaceutical manufacturing sales with a proven sales track record is required. In depth knowledge of the pharmaceutical and biotech industry is also required. Experience in CGMP manufacturing requirements, especially aseptic processes, is a plus. This position will report to the Vice President of Business Development. Prefer candidates in the southeast with convenient access to the Birmingham area, but location is flexible. Travel is required.

Business Development Manager, Drug Delivery This position will focus on identifying new customers and strengthening relationships with existing customers in drug delivery development. Responsibilities include researching, identifying and qualifying new customers, securing and coordinating appointments with prospective customers, and maintaining strong relationships with new and current customers. Candidates must have a strong ability to communicate technically, be able to represent a range of technologies and to understand and react to potential client’s needs. BS degree in science or business with a minimum of five years in pharmaceutical development sales with a proven sales track record is required. In depth knowledge of the pharmaceutical and biotech industry is also required. Experience in drug delivery is a plus. This position will report to the Vice President of Business Development. Prefer candidates on the west coast but location is flexible. Travel is required.

Environmental Health and Safety Manager This position will be responsible over all EHS practices, policies, and activities at SurModics Pharmaceuticals and for ensuring compliance to all relevant local, state, and federal regulations including OSHA, EPA, DEA, and DOT. These activities will, in part, involve writing policies and practices to ensure regulatory compliance, performing and coordinating all employee training programs, hands-on involvement in waste management and in implementing safety programs and training. Requirements include a BS/MS in related technical area plus at least 5 years industrial EHS experience in chemical research and/or manufacturing facilities, demonstrated abilities in establishing safety practices and policies, experience in employee training, and thorough knowledge of relevant OSHA, EPA, ADEM, DEA, and DOT regulations. Preferred candidates will have certifications in related specialties (CHMM, CIH, CSP, MSPH, etc). The candidate must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal) and have a proven record in establishing good working relationships between departments. In addition, the candidate must be detail-oriented, highly organized, and able to maintain thorough and complete documentation of EHS-related records and documents.

Maintenance Mechanic with significant cross training in millwright, welding, rotating equipment tear down and rebuild as well as low voltage electrical.  Job duties include: Performing standard preventive maintenance procedures on specialized pharmaceutical manufacturing and general mechanical equipment and utilities. Providing repair, fabrication, and general labor services. Providing instruction to external service providers. Requires a High School diploma or equivalent.  Training and/or certification as a millwright with proven ability to troubleshoot and repair complex rotating equipment required. A minimum of 2 years experience working in the Pharmaceutical or Biotechnology or similar industry is desired.
